St Helier

This residential suburb is located in Carshalton, in the London Borough of Sutton. The neighbourhood includes parts of Carshalton Beeches, Carshalton on the Hill, The Wrythe, Carshalton Village, and Middleton Circle. Known for its vast natural scenery, both land and water, Carshalton is unsurprisingly popular for its trout fisheries, with the fish coming from the River Wandle. Carshalton is one of the few areas in London gifted with a Further Education College, a Hospital and an abundance of public parks. The neighbourhood can be a great day trip from the city, as it is well located from central London with trains from Carshalton station to Victoria station taking less than 30 minutes.

Carshalton’s long history is evident in the meaning of its name, which is said to have been written as ‘Aulton’. This simply translates as ‘Old Town’ from Old English – since the last two centuries it has been known as its current version. Similar to many places in England, Carshalton was once a manor, yet unlike many other manors this area was split into five separate manors before being amalgamated then held by Godfrey de Manneville. By the 12th century, the manor exchanged hands to another aristocratic owner, Faramusus de Bolonia, and continued to pass hands through the British elite over the following centuries. Carshalton All Saints Church is testament of the area’s long Christian history, as it is thought to date back to the Norman Conquest of 1066.

Nearby Carshalton Beeches is named as such due to a line of open fields with mature beeches (the tree not the seaside resort!) along what is known now as Beeches Avenue.

British pop star, Sir Cliff Richard, once lived next door to his grandmother in Carshalton.

A local Carshalton Secondary School has enforced a controversial policy that calls for all pupils to have number plates on their bicycles if they wish to cycle to school. St Helier’s Hospital has also had immense pressure recently and campaigners fear it closing. In 2020, it was decided that emergency, maternity and children’s in-patient services would close at both Epsom and St Helier Hospitals and a new specialist facility would be built at the Sutton Hospital site in Belmont.

In 2016, the Charles Cryer Theatre in Carshalton was closed, after operating for 25 years. Thankfully, Sutton Council found a new tenant for the space and it was reopened in 2019 by the CryerArts Ltd company. For the first time in 30 years, Sutton Council has developed new council homes, adding 93 homes to the borough. The project has brought 15 houses to Carshalton, 57 flats to Wallington and 21 houses to Beddington. The Carshalton site, on Fellowes Road, is already fully occupied. In 2019, a much-needed multi-million-pound refurb was completed for Carshalton railway station, bringing new lifts to the station that improve its accessibility for passengers with mobility issues.
