The Roundway

This neighbourhood of northern Tottenham is a lush pocket of north London that makes residents feel like they are tucked away in a peaceful suburb. The locals make up an extremely ethnically diverse but tight knit community. On a typical weekend day, you’ll find some residents taking part in a local cultural event at the Bozcader Community Centre, while others are jogging along the Moselle brook. Along its central street, Great Cambridge Road, you’ll find food from across the globe. Whether it’s Chinese food at Chasing Dragon, kebabs at Tottenham Best, or pastries at Cafe Lavin, there’s plenty of great options even late into the evening. Between all of this and the well maintained large houses, it’s no wonder that the neighbourhood attracts families who are in search of an affordable alternative to central London, as well as students and young professionals.

This area was originally the site of multiple manors. One of the most well-known ones would have been Pembroke Manor, a vast estate run by Sir Henry de Hastings back in the 13th century. However, he ended up being imprisoned in 1266, leaving much of the manor to his wife. Later on, in the 15th century, Pembroke Manor, along with many others in the area, were united under the management of John Gedney. By the 19th century, much of the manors and houses had been split up and sold off to different wealthy families from the area. Today, many of these buildings are no longer standing, but some of the green spaces that were once their grounds remain.

The White Hart Lane estate, known by many as the Tower Gardens Estate, dates back all the way to the beginning of the 20th century, when the council purchased a 255- acre site. Beyond the houses that were built as a result, the estate also has a large public recreational space - which was donated by Sir Samuel Montagu, a wealthy politician from the area.

Unfortunately, the crime rate is higher than London’s overall average. Many of the crimes have been coded as miscellaneous theft and car break-ins. Considering that a few of the crimes have been violent, it’s easy to see why locals don’t feel unsafe in the neighbourhood.

Haringey Council recently announced in its local plan that it will be working on improvements to the neighbourhood’s high road. They’ve acknowledged that the high street has some vacancies, and also lacks the retail diversity that many residents need in order to rely on the street for regular errands. The council will be working on launching a major regeneration project throughout the area, and as a part of it, will be creating more business opportunities and employment spaces. The SEGRO industrial park scheme on White Heart Lane is set to provide some of the required employment space when it opens in 2022. This will add to the already substantial amount of jobs created by the recent completion of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the east of this neighbourhood. The new ground is one of the best equipped and most lucrative sports stadiums in the world.
