Totteridge

The neighbourhood of Totteridge is known by some as “London’s Beverly Hills.” When wandering through the wide leafy streets that are lined with gated mock- Tudor and post-war mansions, it’s easy to understand how the area got this nickname. The numerous affluent families that live in the locality love that this zone 4 neighbourhood is only a short tube ride from central London, but still has managed to maintain its beloved bucolic feel. It’s this rural vibe and plethora of outdoor space that brings in many visitors as well. Between the Totteridge Tennis Club, South Herts Golf Club and Whetstone Stray gardens, there’s plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors in Totteridge.

The Totteridge neighbourhood originally served as a medieval estate for the Bishop of Ely. In the 14th century, the estate received a visit from Edward I which led to the building of a chapel on the property. In the following centuries, the area began to slowly develop with farmland and local churches. Some of the 17th and 18th century mansion-like farmhouses are still standing in the area today. Since then, many other mansions have been built in the area, as famous Londoners discovered the privacy that the area offered.

Arsene Wenger, the former manager of Arsenal, lives in Totteridge. Many high-status football players are also attracted to this area for their ability to purchase large secluded homes.

St.Andrews Church, which has been in the neighbourhood since 1790, has a yew tree on site that is likely over 1000 years old.

Due to the area’s distance from central London and rural character, it can feel a bit sleepy at times. However, residents love the neighbourhood for this exact reason, and are able to find more than enough places to eat or drink when they do want to stay local. Neighbourhood favourite, The Orange Tree Public House has been serving locals since the 18th century!

Since the area is restricted by the green belt, there is little major development occurring in Totteridge. However, there are a handful of large new built homes that are popping up in the area. These homes, in addition to many older mansions, are all selling for at least seven figures. Slightly east of this postcode, towards Whetstone, the W Place scheme is the most significant nearby development. However, with the project comprising only 22 new apartments, it is safe to say that Totteridge residents have little to worry about regarding large changes to their neighbourhood.
