Uxbridge Road & South Hanworth
Within this eastern pocket of Feltham, locals enjoy a more lush residential experience than other parts of the area. Spoiled by multiple parks, such as Hanworth, Crane, and Leitrim, locals have plenty of options for enjoying the outdoors. While the housing stock might not be anything special - mostly post- war flats - the affordability makes the area attractive to many. Residents also like the conveniences within the neighbourhood. A typical weekend day will find some locals enjoying a good work out at the Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre, catching a community lecture at the public library, or roaming the independent shops along Hampton Road. Despite the quiet nature of the neighbourhood, residents find that there’s more than enough going on to meet their needs.
Crane Park is a local favourite throughout the neighbourhood. The site of the park dates back to the mid-16th century though. At the time, gunpowder mills had been established in the area. Later on, in 1766, The Hounslow Gunpowder Works opened in order to manufacture more gunpowder for the region. In 1820, the mill was purchased and expanded to over 40 hectares. Over the course of the 19th century the mill grew into a very successful business and claimed to produce “the finest black gunpowder in Europe.” In order to contain the water that was used to drive the mill machinery, the owners built Crane Park Island. After the licence to manufacture gunpowder was revoked in 1927, the land was sold off, eventually being turned into a park by the Twickenham Council. Today, you can still spot some of the wheel pits and machine bases in the park.
The site on which Hanworth Park Leisure Centre sits today was once a military airfield. Hard to imagine the park and leisure centre with a runway of its own today!
This part of the neighbourhood is in close proximity to Heathrow Airport. While residents don’t love the noise or road congestion this causes, those who travel do find it to be extremely convenient. It also provides significant employment for many locals.
Feltham will be the site of a major regeneration project. Over the next 15 years, Hounslow Council will be building nearly 3,500 new homes and investing £15 million in the area. The council has also committed to opening up more park space, and improving the public realm on a whole. There will also be new commercial space as well as plenty of cycling and pedestrian pathways. These changes will help bring more cultural institutions and business opportunities to the area and much progress has already been made.
As part of the scheme, developer Weston Homes is building a collection of luxury apartments in Manor Lane, featuring the company’s unique, all-inclusive high specification. Launched in Spring 2022, a selection of apartments will be available through the government’s Help to Buy scheme. The £27.5 million development will see 104 one- and two- bedroom apartments created across two adjoining buildings. Construction has begun on-site with the work expected to end in 2023.
In 2021, 25 new homes were sldo completed at Barnham Court in Feltham as part of the council’s redevelopment of the Sparrow Farm Community Centre. That year as well, the council picked builder Willmott Dixon to deliver its Frank Towell Court 102 homes scheme, a £32m scheme that involves the construction of two eight-storey residential towers, a four-storey block of flats and seven Mews houses. In Summer 2022, councillors celebrated the progress at the site and construction is expected to be completed by November 2022. The council has also completed improvements to the public realm that have been long awaited. In 2021, The Feltham Arenas Parklands Masterplan, which was launched in 2016, celebrated its first milestone with the official unveiling of a host of new environmental improvements.
