West Norwood

This neighbourhood is commonly known as West Norwood, immediately boarding Crystal Palace, Gipsy Hill, Crown Point, West Dulwich, Tulse Hill and Streatham Common. The neighbourhood area is both urbanised and residential, in the heart of one of London’s most multicultural Boroughs, Lambeth. West Norwood has great transport links, with its own station located in Zone 3 which gets you to London Bridge in around 30 minutes. A lot of community facilities are located on or near Norwood High Street with multinational restaurants, independent cafes and its very own Picture House and Library complex. The area has a recently opened leisure and sports complex, boasting a 25 metre swimming pool, gym and studios.

Founded in 1837, West Norwood Cemetery is one of London’s largest private Cemeteries, earning it a spot as one of the Magnificent Seven – a group of large London Cemeteries. By 1857 West Norwood Rail Station had opened to the public, it was formerly known as “Lower Norwood” but local resident’s preferred to change its name to something less demeaning reflecting the historical campaigning spirit of this community. The emergence of buses led to West Norwood’s famous bus garage opening its doors in 1909 by the London General Omnibus Company. Looking at more recent history, under new constituency boundary plans, the Labour held Dulwich and West Norwood constituency which has been around since 1997, will be abolished and transformed to Norwood and Thornton Heath.

West Norwood Cemetery has its own Greek necropolis, which contains a half-size Parthenon. The town was also once home to British singing legend, Adele.

West Norwood is in the process of reviewing plans to invest government money into the area to support local residents, businesses and visitors. Norwood high streets’ very own Theatre, is also set to undergo a £1.8 million restoration thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. There are also two significant residential developments currently underway in the area. 6 Lansdowne Hill is a scheme containing 51 new flats with rooftop amenity space on the 5th floor. Further south the Doulton Park development will be lower-density, comprising 7 luxury 2 and 3-bedroom homes.
