West Southall
Southall is a west London suburb, famously rich in cultural diversity. Known for its tight knit Asian communities, the neighbourhood boasts multiple venues catering to a broad variety of individuals. On typical weekend days, residents can be found enjoying the South Indian food at Saravanaa Bhavan, or the Pakistani food at Rita’s Chilli Chaat. Often, locals enjoy following up a meal with the latest Bollywood film at Himalaya Palace Cinema. Aside from these exciting eateries and businesses, residents also benefit from the affordable housing options in the area. Between the older Victorian terraced houses and the newer post-war offerings, there’s plenty to choose from. For anyone in search of a quiet but tightly knit suburb, Southall is a great choice!
Southall dates back to the 12th century, when it was just a small hamlet. At the time, it made up a good portion of the rural part of the manor of Norwood. Once the railway arrived nearby though, everything changed. The neighbourhood began to develop, with cottages being built for labourers moving in. This also brought in the addition of factories in the area. Further housebuilding led to slight overcrowding following the Second World War. By the 1950s, the population had shifted. Many Asian immigrants moved in after having found work at nearby Heathrow or the local factories. Today, the area is still known for its large South Asian community.
Himalaya Palace Cinema is a favourite amongst locals. It was built back in 1929 and was modelled to look like a Chinese temple by the famed Art Deco theatre architect, George Coles.
Unfortunately, there’s no rail station in this part of the neighbourhood. Still, residents find it easy enough to take any of the many bus lines, and don’t mind the short walk to the nearby Southall station.
Peabody is working with Ealing council to develop nearly 500 new homes in the neighbourhood. This development, named The Green, will be mixed-use, bringing not just new homes but also commercial spaces. The council estimates that the project will add over 250 new jobs in the community. The development will include new public spaces for the local community to use to improve their health and wellbeing and create opportunities to socialise.
