West Wickham & Langley Park
West Wickham surrounds West Wickham railway station, with the High Street bounding it to the south, the grounds of Langley Park Golf Course to the north, and Old Wilsonians Association Private Sports Ground and Black Recreation Ground to the east and west. South of the railway tracks are the shops (lining up from the station to the High Street), along with some primary schools. North of the tracks are well spaced, well arranged houses stretching in between green spaces on either side. In fact, the area is characterised by wide, tree lined roads, with pedestrian paths snaking in between them, making the area a truly green environment. West Wickham railway station (in Zone 5) has four South-eastern trains running every hour to central London – half to Cannon Street and the other half to Waterloo East and Charing Cross.
West Wickham dates back to pre-Norman times, and is mentioned in the Domesday book that the area contained: “24 villagers have 4 ploughs, 13 salves, a church, a mill at 20d, a wood at 10 pigs”. One could say that up to the 20th century it was still very much a village, until the inter-war period saw development creep up in the area, and today it is a model leafy and quaint suburb. The Swan Public House on the High Street was built in 1840, and is a Grade II listed building, your good old traditional English pub.
Manfred Mann (featuring Paul Jones), The Mersey beats and the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra held a concert at Blakes Recreation Ground back in 1964.
Stephen Dillane has acted in numerous theatre productions, famous movies and TV series – from a one man Macbeth, to Stannis Baratheon in Game of Thrones and Graham Sutherland in the Crown. He grew up in West Wickham.
The Prime Meridian runs through West Wickham (there’s a marker at Coney Recreation Ground).
This part of West Wickham only has primary schools, and no secondary ones. However, prominent secondary schools such as Ravensbourne Secondary School, Langley Park School and Edenham High School are less than a kilometre away; just a few minutes’ drive.
There are plans to open a new leisure centre in West Wickham. Along with redeveloping the existing 50 years old centre, which will include a new swimming pool, library and underground car park, the council also intends to build flats on either side of the complex, adding needed housing stock to the area. A proposal has also been submitted to the council for the redevelopment of the West Wickham Library. The application was approved in Spring 2022 and works intending to begin at the end of that year. The new extended library will, in addition to its current facilities and services, provide a variety of IT resources and community spaces, including a new event gallery, a new cafe, a maker space, a business lounge for co-working, a community space for hire and a new outdoor classroom. A housing scheme of 26 flats is also being developed on the land behind the library, which will be a mix of over 50% social and affordable housing.
