Wexham

Nestled above central Slough, stretching up towards Stoke Common and Stoke Wood, sits the northern strip of Slough, Berkshire, commonly known as Wexham. West of London, the entirety of Slough and its peripheral villages have developed a strong commuter belt reputation - especially owing to the recent Elizabeth Line expansion to Slough. Sitting on the periphery of central Slough, houses in this region fall on the larger and more expensive side of Slough’s property market, with 5 bedroom detached suburban homes averaging at around £1.2 million!

Similar to Slough, which was first referenced in 1196, Wexham’s origins stretch far back into history. Even today, there are a proliferation of Saxon and medieval buildings in Wexham. The Parish Church of St Mary is the most notable of these, with its nave dating back to the 12 century! However, much archaeological evidence in the area has uncovered significant Paleolithic settlement in the area, particularly at Marble Pit Head, where a wealth of flint tools were discovered by researchers in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Possibly Wexham’s most famous building, however, is the Wexham Park Hospital. The hospital, which services a wide-range of health and medical facilities - including plastic surgery units - won a prestigious RIBA Architecture Award in 1967. Designed by Powell & Moya in a modernist fashion - the hospital famously sites on the site of the Wexham Park. Wexham Park, a Victorian era manor house that dominated Wexham’s landscape for many years, before being refurbished into a state of the art hospital in the mid 1960s! Now, the hospital is in the Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, merging Wexham Park Hospital with the Frimley Park Hospital.

Wexham is part of the Slough Borough Council, which is still in the process of formulating its new local plan - which will shape the future of Slough’s housing and infrastructural development across the town. Therefore, it is difficult to say what development will specifically target the Wexham locale. However, recent consultation documents reveal preliminary discussions have been made regarding development in Wexham. Particularly in Wexham Street, George Green, and Middle Green! Adding to this, the Slough Urban Renewal scheme recently produced a 104 unit housing estate in Wexhham Green - which all sold!
