Wimbledon Chase

Sandwiched between Merton Park and Raynes Park, this neighbourhood sits within the south western borough of Merton. The highly residential area is well and truly suburban and is predominantly made up of Edwardian and Victorian terraced streets, bisected by the bustling Kingston Road. Regardless of its suburban nature, this neighbourhood still caters to all types of residents through its exciting high street which hosts a number of cafes, a supermarket, a dentist, and numerous local favourites. Wimbledon Chase station runs trains to Wimbledon, while the better-connected Raynes Park station takes commuters into central London and back on its regular South Western service. Families are drawn to the area’s proximity to good schools and its large, affordable homes.

Merton Park has its roots in Saxon England, as it was a Saxon estate and ancient parish. Until the late 19th century, city merchant John Innes, owned Merton Park which he used as his own personal manor and grounds. As Wimbledon began to develop to its north, Innes was incentivised to develop his manor into housing due to the economic benefits this would bring him. This led to the creation of Wilton Crescent which was designated a Conservation Area in 1984 and remains largely unchanged since its late 19th century creation.

From 1989 to 2010, Merton Studios was home to British classic police drama, The Bill. In 1984, the much-loved video game, Tomb Raider, was created by Square Enix Europe in their Merton studios.

Crime rates in Merton are on the rise, with the number of people caught with knives and guns increasing by around 36% from 2016-2017 to 2017-2018. Parking charges in Merton were set to increase in a bid to reduce high levels of pollution in neighbouring Raynes Park, though the council reversed that decision in 2021.

Price premiums on houses located near parks are most prevalent in the Borough of Merton, thanks to the sprawling Wimbledon Park. As the London Mayor plans to invest more in local parks, further increases in home values are likely. The Wilson Hospital in Mitcham will also be renovated by Merton Council to provide better healthcare facilities in the borough through new developments. The facilities are expected to open by the end of 2022
