Woodham
Woodham is a quiet suburban village located in the desirable Surrey area. The neighbourhood attracts mostly families who are in search of a peaceful alternative to Central London. Residents surely find the serenity they’re in search of here. A stroll through the streets will reveal the rows of affordable post-war terraced houses, many of which are equipped with their own private gardens. Aside from the great housing options, residents love the endless amounts of outdoor space in the community. Locals take full advantage of the Old Rive Ditch by jogging along the water, in addition to enjoying picnics and social gatherings at Heathervale Recreation Ground. During those colder months, residents can be found packed into the New Haw Community Centre for lectures and meetings, often following them up with a round of pints at The Black Prince. Seeing all that the neighbourhood has to offer, it’s no wonder that it’s developed into such a tightly knit community.
The area has been known to be a settlement of some size since 1241. Eventually, the land grew into a cluster of cottages and inns. Once the railway arrived in 1848, things began to change. Industries were now moving into the area, like that of watermills and ironmills. An aircraft factory was also constructed in the neighbourhood. This also led to the growth of the neighbourhood’s own parish in 1857. Today, the area has shed much of its industrial roots but is continuing to grow its residential population.
The neighbourhood is home to the Animal and Plant Health Agency. An important government agency, this department is tasked with protecting the health and welfare of animals throughout the United Kingdom. Additionally, they also work on protecting the general public from diseases.
The busy M25 road cuts through this neighbourhood. Being a multi-lane street, its traffic brings quite a lot of noise and pollution to the area. Even so, residents find that being so close has its benefits as well. For drivers, they love having easy access to the convenient road.
While there are no major developments in this neighbourhood, there are a few different housing complexes that are popping up in the bordering area. Just around the corner, Redrow is working on the luxury Bleriot Gate development. Aside from this, the eagerly awaited Addlestone One development is nearby and will bring new homes, shops, a cinema and hotel to the general neighbourhood.
Despite this area’s suburban character the pace of development and change has been surprisingly steady compared to other neighbourhoods around the greenbelt. The most significant of these changes will be the development of a vast 147,000 square metre site on Parvis Road in West Byfleet to the south of this neighbourhood. The Broadoaks development will comprise 155 dwellings, employment land, research facilities and a new school. Woking Council also plans to create a 1.2 acre site for travellers slightly to the north of Woodham which has been controversial among some residents.
