Wormwood Scrubs & East Acton
This northern pocket of White City is packed with green space and wonderful institutions. A typical day in the neighbourhood will find researchers rushing between labs at the new Imperial College campus, doctors heading back to work at Hammersmith Hospital, and students hanging out after class at the highly rated Ark Burlington Danes Academy. Aside from attracting many of those who work or study at these institutions, White City is also a popular spot for families looking for quaint but modest west London flats. On the weekends, most locals are busy enjoying the vast outdoor space at Wormwood Scrubs, or are nearby at the neighbouring Shepherd’s Bush shopping district. For anyone looking to live in close proximity to the posh neighbourhoods of west London, this area is a great pick that won’t break the bank quite as much.
Local park, Wormwood Scrubs, was originally just a place of falling trees and poor soil. By 1801, the Grand Union Canal was constructed through the land, slicing it in half. Later on, in 1859, the site was converted into a training ground for volunteer forces who needed to practice rifle shooting. The site officially became an exercising ground for forces through the Wormwood Scrubs Act in 1879. Shortly after, the Wormwood Scrubs Prison and Hammersmith Hospital were both built nearby. Today the green space is used as a public park, and offers athletic fields and even a model aircraft runway!
Pete Townshend, the guitarist from The Who, grew up in White City. One of his solo albums was even named after the neighbourhood.
Unfortunately, the busy Westway cuts through the southern part of the neighbourhood. This can make the surrounding area a bit noisy. Still, residents who drive, find that having the Westway so close by is actually a convenience!
Imperial College just recently opened a new campus in White City. Once fully set up, the site will be a 23-acre integrated and collaborative campus. Aside from bringing multidisciplinary research facilities, Imperial College is also looking for ways to partner with the local community in order to boost education and employment in the area. The new campus is key component of the White City Innovation District, a partnership between the College and the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Plans for the Innovation District are still ongoing and its next phase of expansion has already begun, with more facilities expecting to open in 2023.
