Worplesdon

Worplesdon, to the north-west of Guildford in Surrey, is an historic civil parish sitting upon 400 hectares of common land. Worplesdon is both the central village and the name of the parish, but there are several well-connected communities dispersed throughout the locale, including: Broadacres, Jacobs Well, Fairlands, and Wood Street Village. Situated on the outskirts of Guildford the housing market boasts a variety of units; from charming country cottages to large detached houses with acerage, this locale has a strong a vibrant community culture and ideal for those wishing to indulge in country life.

Listed as ‘Werpesdune’ in the Domesday Book survey, by its recording in 1086, there were 22 households in the region, putting it in the top 40% of largest settlements in the Domesday Book! However, there is archeaological evidence that far pre-dates this history. Nestled on the banks of extensive heathland, there has been a wealth of archaeological evidence to suggest human habitation in the area as far back as the Bronze Age! In 1877, General Pitt-Rivers excavated two Bronze-Age barrows on Whitmoor Common - which are thought to have been funeary monuments to house the dead - therefore suggesting an ancient organised society. Roman ruins of a home were also found in the 1880s on Broad Street Common, dating to the 2nd century!

Worplesdon, although on the outskirts of Guildford, lies within the Metropolitan Green Belt, with Guildford’s local authority plan demonstrating that this will remain the case at least until 2032. The organisation of Worpleson into several small hamlets and villages gives this area a distinctive feel, and is well-known for its community-oriented local culture. ALthough rural, there are several high-employment areas of Worplesdon, including the Pines Trading Estate. Whilst, as is the case with many rural areas, development is slow, Guildford has acknowledged the need to develop housing in the area. Currently on the market houses range from new-build bungalows, quaint country cottages, large manor houses with acerage, and detached two-storey properties with varying price points!
