BE04: Managing Heat Risk

All development proposals should minimise internal heat gain and the risks of overheating through design, layout, building orientation and use of appropriate materials.

Major development proposals should demonstrate how they will reduce the potential for overheating and reliance on air conditioning systems by:

  • minimising internal heat generation through energy efficient design;
  • reducing the amount of heat entering a building through orientation, shading, albedo, fenestration, insulation and the provision of green roofs and walls;
  • managing the heat within the building through exposed internal thermal mass and high ceilings;
  • maximising passive ventilation; and
  • where necessary, providing mechanical ventilation and active cooling systems.
