DM 4: Shopfronts and Forecourts
Proposals for shopfronts including blinds, canopies and development on forecourts will be approved where:
- they are in scale and proportion to the host building and appropriate to the character of the area in which it is located;
- they do not cause an obstruction or adversely affect pedestrian or highway safety;
- they would preserve or enhance heritage assets having regard to the design and materials of shopfronts, including any traditional or original features that should be retained, and the number, siting and illumination of signs;
- the shopfront would secure inclusive access;
- the illumination of shopfronts and forecourts would not detrimentally affect the amenity of neighbouring occupiers or the character or appearance of a conservation area; and
- where the proposal involves the installation of a new or replacement shopfront, the use of toughened glass will be required.
Security shutters should be of an open mesh design and, wherever possible, should be located internally.
