SE3 Alleviating Flood Risk
- New development should ensure no net loss in permeable surfaces and incorporate permeable or porous surfacing which allows water to drain through, such as gravel, permeable concrete block paving or porous asphalt, or allow the rainwater to drain naturally into a lawn or swale.
- Where possible, new developments will be required to deliver Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDs) for infiltration and storage in retention ponds maximising the use of ‘natural’ SuD features including wetlands, swales, streams, storage ponds and reed beds, especially in areas within or in close proximity to a flood risk zone.
- New development should incorporate appropriate water resource management design features such as green roofs or water butts to ensure efficient water use, water harvesting and reuse of grey water, and avoid water course pollution.
- Opportunities to naturalise river courses (e.g. the Quaggy river) and restore inchannel habitats as well as to restore natural wetland areas and enhance their habitat as part of development schemes will be supported.
