LP34: Managing and Protecting the Borough’s Green Belt and Metropolitan Open Land

The Council will protect designated Green Belt and Metropolitan Open Land, as defned on the Policies Map, for the purposes of:

  • Safeguarding the countryside from encroachment;
  • Checking the unrestricted sprawl of Greater London;
  • Preventing the merging of: Woodford Green with Woodford Bridge, Wanstead with Ilford and Aldersbrook and Barkingside with Hainault; and
  • Preserving the setting and special character of Aldersbrook, Snaresbrook, Woodford and Wanstead.

The Council will protect the openness of the borough’s Green Belt and Metropolitan Open Land by:

  • Resisting new development regarded as inappropriate development as set out in the National Planning Policy Framework; and
  • Supporting development which improves access to Green Belt areas for benefcial uses such as outdoor sport and recreation where there is no confict with protecting the openness and nature conservation value of such land.

Implementation

The Council will seek to enhance the accessibility and opportunities on Fairlop Plain, in particular recreational facilities at Fairlop Waters.
