LP7: Back Gardens

The Council will resist the use of outbuildings ordinarily used for ancillary purposes within a dwelling curtilage or garden as separate sleeping and living accommodation.

The Council will only support the subdivision of existing housing plots and gardens to create new residential accommodation where;

  • Development provides both existing and future occupiers with an appropriate level of internal space and external amenity space in accordance with LP29;
  • It meets the design requirements of LP26; and
  • It provides its own independent access.

Implementation

The Planning Service will continue to work with other Council service areas to efectively tackle the problem of ‘beds in sheds’ in the borough, utilising legal powers across planning, fre safety, housing and environmental health.
