LP8: Gypsies and Travellers
The Council will aim to meet the needs of Gypsies and Travellers by:
- Retaining and protecting the existing Gypsy and Traveller site at Forest Road Site; and
- Supporting maintenance and intensifcation of the Northview Caravan Site to provide up to 7 additional pitches to meet identifed need over the plan period.
Development of any additional temporary or permanent Gypsy and Traveller accommodation will be supported where:
- The site provides for an appropriate layout, in terms of pitches, amenity buildings, hard-standings and open spaces;
- The site is not located in the Green Belt, unless there are very special circumstances;
- The site is located in Flood Zone 1 or exceptionally in Flood Zone 2 and is otherwise suitable for development;
- The site is serviced by a suitable access road and is accessible from the public highway and adequate provision for parking, turning and servicing on site to ensure road safety for occupants and visitors;
- The site is well related to existing communities and accessible to local services and facilities, such as shops, schools, healthcare and public transport; and
- Proposals are sensitive to local character and surroundings.
Implementation
Work in partnership with the Council’s housing department to monitor any unauthorised encampments and manage any short-term transient stops; and
The Council will review the needs of Gypsies and Travellers to ensure their requirements are planned for accordingly through upgrading and maintenance of existing site.
