Proposals for new development should whenever possible deliver a 10% net gain in biodiversity retaining natural features that support wildlife, establishing ecological networks and including new habitats that respond to the local context and the character of the site. New planting and landscapes should respond to the wider landscape through use of native species that support greater biodiversity. Applicants will need to demonstrate the process that they have been through utilising Natural England’s Biodiversity Metric 3.1 (or subsequent version) and the options they have considered to deliver biodiversity net gain.
