Policy OSC3 (Protection of School Playing Fields)

Development of school playing fields on surplus school sites will not be permitted unless:

  • the proposed development is for an outdoor recreational use which retains the open character of the area; or
  • the playing fields are re-provided in full in an alternative location within the local area; or
  • in the event of a suitable replacement site not being available in the area to meet the needs of the local community, through developing part of the overall school site, greater than half of the playing fields are retained in a usable form and made available as public open space and their recreational use enhanced by appropriate outdoor facilities to meet the needs of the local community; and
  • appropriate financial contributions are made to the Borough Council for the provision of new leisure facilities or the enhancement of existing leisure facilities in the area to meet the needs of the local community.
