98 Kennels and Catteries

Kennels. Kennels will not be permitted in residential areas. In the Metropolitan Green Belt, permission may be granted for new kennels or the extension of existing establishments if the following criteria are complied with:

  • the location is within the curtilage of an existing dwelling. Where possible, existing vacant buildings should be used (see Policy 77);
  • there are no other residential properties nearby;
  • road access is satisfactory and does not involve the use of narrow country lanes;
  • sufficient car parking spaces shall be provided;
  • the siting and appearance shall not harm the ecology, natural beauty or amenity of the countryside.

Catteries. Similar considerations apply as with kennels. However, small-scale catteries may also be permitted in residential areas where environmentally acceptable.
